This past weekend was one of our favourite times of year – the Canadian Screen Week culminating in the Family Fan Day on the Saturday, and the Canadian Screen Awards on the Sunday. The highlights of Saturday were getting to see the long lineups for certain artists and stars, including Carmilla‘s Natasha Negovanlis + Elise Bauman, Allan Hawco, Jade Hassouné, Amybeth McNulty, Dalila Bela and Kyla Matthews of Anne, Big Brother Canada‘s Ika Wong + Gary Levy, Carter‘s Jerry O’Connell, Kim’s Convenience‘s Jean Yoon, Simu Liu and Andrew Phung, and a memorable performance from The Launch‘s Vivian Hicks. There were some exotic animals, a makeup station and it was all hosted by Carlos Bustamante.
On #FamFanDay, we asked #AnneWithAnE stars @AmybethMcnulty, @Dalila_Bela1 & Kyla Matthews what their best experience with a fan was: pic.twitter.com/jU8uRxqWCG

We returned to the radically revamped Sony Centre for the Performing Arts on Sunday to witness many of the same performers that had made an impression on Saturday, along with such luminaries as Billy Campbell of Cardinal, who ended up picking up an award, the incomparable Kim Coates and Maxim Roy, both of Bad Blood, the lovely Caroline Dhavernas of Mary Kills People, the multifaceted Jann Arden, the sublime Michelle Latimer and Sarain Fox of RISE, Marc-Andre Grondin of Les Affamés, Kawa Ada and Saraa Choudry of The Breadwinner and an army of talent dressed to the nines.
Decamping to the Press Room, we were moved by a speech by two-time Best Actor winner Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, cheered as hard as the Shaftesbury crew as Elise Bauman was presented with the 2018 Cogeco Audience Choice Award, asked a question to Tatiana Maslany, who was named Best Actress for a fifth consecutive year, and were thrilled with awards given to Anne, Kim’s Convenience, Alias Grace, Nabil Rajo of Boost, and there was a moment when Aisling Walsh of the Canadian Screen Award multiple award winner Maudie retreated to the washroom for the award. We remained thrilled for already announced recipients Allie MacDonald of Cardinal and Steven McCarthy of Mary Kills People. Now the countdown begins for next year’s Canadian Screen Awards!
