Interview: American Murderer’s Tom Pelphrey

by Charles Trapunski

Looking for an intense and brooding leading man? (Who isn’t these days?!) Well, we have definitely found one ourselves and his name happens to be Tom Pelphrey. Yes, the Tom Pelphrey who so brilliantly encapsulated the character of Ben Davis in the series Ozark. The wayward brother of Wendy Byrde (embodied by the legendary Laura Linney), Ben arrives in the town, develops a relationship with Ruth Langmore (multiple Emmy Award winner Julia Garner) and then is so cruelly and callously sentenced to die by his sister. In a surprise appearance in season four, for which Pelphrey received a long-awaited Emmy nomination, we got to see a little bit more of the way in which Ben was treated before being disposed.

In addition to his award-worthy role in Ozark, Pelphrey as well appeared in the David Fincher film Mank, as the brother of the titular Joseph L. Mankiewicz, as well as in the Cinemax series Banshee as the former Aryan brother Kurt Bunker.

For our in-depth Zoom video interview, Pelphrey shared a little bit about his process into playing one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives, Jason Derek Brown, in the new movie American Murderer. The riveting thriller centres on Brown (played by Pelphrey), who is a charismatic con man bankrolling his extravagant lifestyle through scams. Hot on his tail is the character of Lance Leising (played Ryan Phillippe), a dogged FBI special agent determined to put Brown behind bars. We also see the ways in which Jason Derek Brown interacts with his family members, including Yellowstone‘s Jacki Weaver as his mother Jeanne, and as his sister Jamie Brown, For All Mankind and The Boys‘ Shantel VanSanten.
