Interview: Sort Of’s Bilal Baig, Fab Filippo and Jennifer Kawaja

by Leora Heilbronn

Sort Of was so important to us that we made a concerted effort to participate in the press junket for the CBC, and soon to be HBO Max, series. It’s the rare series that was able to screen during TIFF this year, a prestigious honour, and it was such a joy to hear from its core creative team of Bilal Baig, Fab Filippo and Jennifer Kawaja who have such reverence for the project (our discussion barely scratched the surface of why this show is essential viewing). Part of why the show will resonate with so many is due to its refreshing on screen representation, in which the lead Bilal Baig is queer trans-feminine playing Sabi, a gender-fluid South Asian Canadian, but more than that, they have a magnetic screen presence. We could tell from our in-depth discussion with the team how much of a labour of love this project was and we’re here to tell you it’s one of the best shows of the year.

WATCH:

Sort Of premieres in Canada beginning Tuesday, October 5 on CBC Gem; then broadcasts on CBC TV beginning Tuesday, November 9 with back-to-back episodes starting at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT)
